Imbolc is February 1st! Our first spring ritual of the year!!

 Good Evening,

Imbolc, also spelled Imbolg, is a Pagan ritual that has its origins in the ancient Celtic Irish culture.  It was traditionally celebrated on February 1st until the early Christians absorbed and Christianized the holiday moving it to February 2nd when they also renamed it Candlemass.  It has always been a spring ritual, the first in a series of three spring rituals we celebrate today. Ostara and Beltaine being the following two.

There is a specific Goddess, the Irish Goddess Brigid (also spelled Brighid) who is known also as Bride, that is associated with Imbolc. She also was absorbed and Christianized by the early church and later sainted.  The early Christians came up with an old woman who had lived and died that they claim was the person sainted but the Goddess Bridget had been worshiped for centuries before the woman the church named Saint Bridget was even born.

The Goddess Bridget was known as a triple Goddess, and was considered a bard, a mother Goddess, a Smith (one who works metal), a poet to name a few of her attributes. She is considered one of the Tuatha de Danaan, the magickal race of people who legendarily is believed to have founded the Irish culture.  She was also considered the Goddess of sacred springs and healing wells, and the tying of rags or clooties from a tree next to a sacred well was an offering to the Goddess and a petition or prayer asking her for her blessings regarding something special, many times asking for healing. It was believed as the cloth ribbons or rags disintegrated so to did the special favor asked for materialize.

A symbol of Brigid is the Brigid's Cross, a sun wheel or pagan wheel made from rushes or straw and woven together in a simple manner. It is considered a symbol of the Goddess and is often depicted at this time of the year.  I have included a picture of one here:

The early church claimed February 1st to be Saint Brigid's feast celebration day, while celebrating February 2nd as Candlemass.  We celebrate this holiday as Imbolc, a ritual that before one often  replaces candles used in ritual and cleaning of the altar room and a general first spring cleaning of the home. I myself, have been cleaning, organizing and de-cluttering for the past few weeks and it feels so right!

If you are interested in replacing your used candles, the following may be helpful in choosing the candle colors you will need. The color scheme I choose is the traditional American-Wiccan colors most often used in rituals in this country.

Elemental candles for each compass direction:

North, the element of Earth is Green
East, the element of Air is Yellow
South, the element of fire is Red
West, the element of water is Blue

For Deity candles:
If you use a God/Goddess candles combination the God can be white, yellow or gold while for the Goddess the candle can be black, red or silver

I use a triple Goddess combination, with one white candle for the maiden, a red candle for the mother and a black candle for the crone.  I do not use a candle for the God, though I do invoke him in ritual. Do what feels right for you. It's your ritual after all.

Illumination candles should be white as that color throws the most light, and there are no dyes in the wax to lessen the illumination.

These are the primary candles that should be replaced and refreshed. Take your old candles and place them aside to burn in the summer bonfire or in an outdoor fire pit. If you don't have an out door fire pit then discarding them in the trash is the next best alternative. I wouldn't burn them in an indoor fireplace. The wax can damage your fireplace and cause smoke and odor to permeate your home, not ideal and very smelly!!!

Some people bury them, but candle wax won't biodegrade and is best consumed in fire to release all of the energy that may be contained.  If you don't have a fire pit, then buying a portable metal fire box (many times they are round) at a local home and garden store is also a way of burning them up. It may take a few fires to use them all up, but it can be done. Please check with your local fire department as far as the laws in your community regarding open flame fires. If you find that you just can't burn up your candles, start burning them now to get them as used up as possible and then wrap the remains in brown paper and put in the trash.

I'm lucky that I have a fire pit and frankly I don't know what I would do without it!! Fire is a big, BIG part of my magickal, spiritual practice and without it, well it just wouldn't be the same for me.

These are just a few tid-bits regarding this upcoming Sabbat ritual and feast celebration.  I hope you are looking forward to Imbolc, I know I am!

It's Friday! A day for Love, Magick and the Goddess!!

 Good Evening,

It is Friday! A witchy day to be sure! Of course, people love Friday because ti marks the end of the work week and heralds the start of the weekend!! But as a day for witches, its pretty significant. And, it doesn't have to be the 13th of the month to be special.  Each and every Friday has its own magicks to impart, should you be looking, that is.

Friday is the day of the week that is specific to the Goddess and women's magick, specifically love magicks. Friday gets its name from Freya, a Norse Goddess. She is a Goddess of many things,  cats and love to name just two. This day of the week has traditionally been a day to worship the Goddess, whereas the other days of the week are specific to various Gods or to the Moon, Sun or even planets as Saturn for Saturday!

Red is the color of the day, indicating love, passion, lust and desire.  Friday can also be used to bring about change, for the better and can instill creativity, energy, stamina and can increase desire and passion if lacking.

Want to cast a love spell on a certain someone? As long as this person is in a committed relationship with you (if not, I've included another spell below that you can try without manipulating anyone's energy) you can do the following to cast a strong love enhancing, passion inducing spell on the one you love. Have their permission and go shopping for items for dinner.

You will need:

a Roasting chicken
sprigs of Rosemary
sprigs of lemon Balm
salt, peper
paprika
apples (a variety you enjoy)
onions (also of a variety you like. Vadalia is a large sweet onion perfect for this dish)
vegetables for roasting i.e. potatoes, onions, carrots, parsnips, leeks or any other you prefer
ingredients for/or a chocolate creme pie bakery made
fresh whipping cream
fresh strawberries
sparkling juice for two (beware of alcoholic beverages which at first seems to enhance the loving feelings but can cause havok in the bedroom if too much is imbibed!! You're putting too much effort into this spell to ruin it by getting drunk! So I suggest a pink or red sparkling juice, Martinelli's and Welch's are both excellent brands and can be found in your local supermarket)

A Lover's Dinner for Two

A roasted chicken seasoned with apple, rosemary and sprigs of lemon balm.  Place  a layer of fresh rosemary and lemon balm in the bottom of a roasting pan and place whole, raw chicken on top. Pour a 1/4 cup of sparkling juice over the entire chicken to moisten, then sprinkle chicken with a mixture of salt, black pepper and paprika lightly, seasoning all over.  Cut up a couple of apples, with an onion, your favorite variety of both works well, and place chunks inside cavity of chicken and allow to roast at 325 degrees Fahrenheit until chicken is cooked thoroughly.  Depending on size of chicken appx an hour to an hour and a half. You may baste chicken throughout cooking time to keep moist and tender.  Place cut up roasting vegetables along sides of chicken and also sprinkle with spices.

Serve chicken with sides of roasted vegetables, i.e. potatoes, carrots, parsnips, celery, onions, and leeks, this makes a warm, romantic, love infused dinner. Be sure to have red or pink candles on the table, surrounded with chunks of rose quartz is ideal.

For dessert serve a chocolate creme' pie with fresh, real whipped cream and fresh strawberries as garnish.

Yes! This is a love spell.  For years an old saying has been 'the way to a man's heart is through his stomach'  which speaks to the comfort, nurturing and love that is given when a special meal is prepared for your loved one. Pssst.  .  .   it works on women also!!

If you don't have a special loved one in mind, but are looking for one,  the following may prove helpful to you:
On the night of a new moon, light a red candle and speak to the Goddess of Love. You may call her Aphrodite or by any other name. Even 'Goddess of Love' will work just fine. Ask that the one true love for you be introduced into your life. May your soul mate find you and may you recognize them also when they appear.  Hold your palms out to the flame, be careful not to burn yourself, and chant this incantation "May my true love, find me soon, before the light of the next full moon."  Chant this loudly, firmly and with conviction. Allow the candle to burn out.  NEVER leave a lit candle unattended and if you need to leave or go to sleep before the candle burns out then snuff the candle out safely and re-light at a later time and repeat the process.  This may need to be preformed a few months in a row, depending on how quickly and strongly your magick manifests. Don't worry though, it will manifest. Believe in your magick and it will come to you.

More Friday magickal specifics for this day of January 20, 2012 the color of this day, which corresponds with love, is pink. The Sun enters the sign of Aquarius today at 11:10 am and the moon enters Capricorn today at 5:40 pm.  Incense of the day is Cypress. The Celtic Tree month of Birch ends today. The Celtic tree month of Rowan begins tomorrow.

.  .  .  and you thought the only thing Friday had going for it was the end of the work week!

Want your magick to flow and manifest? Let's de-clutter and do a ritual!

Good Evening,

Many may think that the manifestation of magick must occur over a bubbling cauldron, or with potions, herbs, stones or candles. Magick can manifest by using many tools and one method is to use the physical action of cleaning, clearing and making the area around you free and unfettered with stagnant energy.

De-clutter! Clean, organize, throw-out, re-evaluate, dust and clear.  The very space around us can actually affect how calm, relaxed and comfortable we find ourselves to be. Do you find at times you feel a slight anxiety, a low level stress and uncomfortable feeling?  Many times we try to attribute our dis-comfort to work, people in our lives, the traffic jam we found ourselves in, the clerk who wasn't as friendly as we thought they should be or some other reason.  What if you could feel much better in your personal area? More comfortable, relaxed, at peace and serene? By taking your home and segmenting it into sections, then working on these sections you can find your entire life taking a happy change for the better.

Pick a room to start, just one. Initially make sure its clean of debris and dirt. Basic cleaning and washing of fabrics, curtains, dusting and throwing out of any debris.  Then we start to de-clutter. Go through closets, drawers, cupboards, desks, under beds, on shelves and wipe down and re-evaluate.  Look at everything you have.  Honestly, do you need 47 pens, 30 pencils and 500 paperclips?  Either bring them to the office where they will be used, or recycle them. Save a few, 5 or 6 and get rid of the extras.

I go through magazines and pull out articles that I want to save and put them in a 3 ring binder and recycle the rest. If the magazines are intact you might wish to donate them to your local hospital, doctor's office or senior center.  How many old coats do you have crammed into a closet? Maybe enough to clothe an army? Maybe a small village? PLEASE consider donating these to your local homeless shelter, or recycle by putting them into the clothing receptacles found in most communities where they will help keep others warm.

How many clothes are in your closet that are no longer in style, don't fit or you just do not wear? A good rule of a witch's thumb is, if you haven't worn it in a year (and its not your wedding dress!!!) you can get rid of it. You should get rid of it! Seriously, if its not super sentimental, then you can let it go. By dong so, your present state of being can be affected in a positive way.

What will all of this do? Besides making your home cleaner, it will feel more serene, more calm and less stressful. I promise! When your home is cluttered, you will find your mind, body and spirit energy also cluttered, unhappy and stressed.

When you have cleaned and cleared a room, and just do one at a time, then we can go further. The idea is to relieve stress and open up the channels for magickal manifestation and de-cluttering is the start. Trying to clean and clear the whole home in one fell swoop can be stressful in its own right, so just do one room a week or even a month. Then choose a light incense and a candle or two and light them and allow them to add their energy to the space.

Just the action of cleansing and clearing can create magickal space. In the kitchen, put on the stove a pot of water, a few inches in which you are simmering water. Add a few slices of orange, lemon and a few cinnamon sticks and cloves.  Let simmer and fill the air with a warm, homey, pleasant smell.

Now if you want to really put some ummph into your work, now after everything is all neat, organized and orderly, remove all the trash from the house and cast a circle around the inner perimeter of your house.  The following is a simple, basic ritual to cast a magick circle and create sacred space in your home. Many cast circles using many more tools and words but tonight we're keeping it simple and easy.

Casting a magick circle:

Tools needed:

5 votive candles in the colors of green, yellow, red, blue and white
a spoon or candle snuffer
a lighter
a packet of incense sticks, at least three sticks, of a pleasant scent you enjoy
a small dessert bowl of spring water
a small salt shaker

Even though you will encompass the entire living area, home or office, conduct the entire ritual in one room. Place the green votive in the north. (Make sure all candles are in fire proof containers and are in places safe to burn.) Place the yellow candle in the east, the red in the south and the blue in the west.  The white should be on a table or flat surface in the middle of your area, this is your altar.

Also on the table put the incense sticks, lighter, water and salt.  Center and quiet yourself. You may play soft music or do this without music. Clap your hands together three times. Then starting in the north, light candles going in a clockwise direction, to the east, then south and then west. Then go to the altar  and light the candle in the center of the altar. This candle represents spirit, God/dess, the universe, love, a higher power.  Call it what you desire.

Put both palms out towards the candle and say " Be here as I create sacred space.  May all I do be done with love as I cast this circle."

Light three or four incense wands and hold them together in a bunch. Wave the wands of burning incense over the altar and say "Blessed be this creature of fire, blessed be this creature of air." Then walk to the north and walk slowly around the circle allowing the incense smoke to waft and drift around the circle. You may choose to say " Here is the boundary of the magick circle, naught but love shall enter in, naught but love shall emerge from within" as you walk around the circle, going from north clockwise around circle ending in the north again.

Place the wands of incense in a safe holder or vase.  Take the salt shaker and sprinkle some salt into the bowl of water, just a few shakes will do. With your index finger, stir with a circular motion to mix and say while stirring " Blessed be this creature of water, blessed be this creature of earth." Then walk to the north and with your fingers sprinkle some of the salted water around the circle going from the north clockwise around to the north again. Then walk to the altar and with your fingers wet from the water touch your forehead and say "I am blessed,  I am loved."

Now walk to the north and holding your right palm up towards the north facing the burning candle, say "Welcome spirits of the Northern realms, be here as I create sacred space and bless this place." Repeat this for the east, south and west.

Go back to the altar and clap hands three times again and say "The circle is cast, let the ritual begin"

Sit for a few moments, or stand, whatever is most comfortable for you.  Close your eyes and see a bright blue fog of mist surround you and your area. See it fill the circle you are standing or sitting in. Imagine in your mind's eye that this blue mist starts to seep out and surround the entire building you live in. If you live in a building with others you can imagine it surrounding your living area only. See it surround and pulsate with loving power and peaceful energy.

You can now speak with your spirit guides, angels, a God or Goddess, even your higher self. Ask for this area to be cleansed, cleared and freed from negative and stagnant energy.  When you have finished and feel comfortable and at peace, walk to the north and with your palm out walk slowly from north, to west this time, then to the south and the east ending back in the north. Imagine the blue mist being sucked back into your palm, back into your body.  Then go around in the same direction, counter clockwise and put out the candles safely, using a candle snuffer or the spoon.

Put the white candle out and allow the incense to burn out in the area. Clean up supplies and put away tools and feel the lighter and freer energy that now fills your living space. You have created sacred space and this energy shift will last for a long time, unless other disruptive energy is introduced. Doing a simple ritual like this monthly is a nice time frame for keeping the energy balanced. Happy Circle Casting!!

Are we to early for Imbolc?

 Good Evening,

Well, Yule is behind us and we've celebrated the beginning of the year for both the Celtic Calendar and pretty much the rest of the world in the past few months, so now what?  Imbolc, that's what!

We're talking a bit early about our next Sabbat on the Wheel of the Year because this Sabbat needs a bit of pre-preparation and I wanted you to have the time to gather the supplies you'll need. These supplies are candles. Lots of candles!

Imbolc is an ancient celebration that is centered around the growing sun becoming stronger and the return of the light in the midst of winter.  Imbolc is also considered our first spring ritual. I know!! SPRING!! I've said before how much I love the pagan calendar and spring for us is a mere 3 weeks away!  We celebrate Imbolc on February 1st.

Now many pagan calendars list Imbolc as February 2nd, but again I'm a traditionalist as you may know, f you read my discussions.  The early Christians adopted this holiday and moved it a day, and renamed it Candlemass in reference to the burning of the candles that is so predominant this Sabbat.  I prefer to celebrate the original day of this Sabbat, February 1st, rather than the modern pagan date of February 2nd. You of course can celebrate any time you desire.

Many pagans use this holiday to replace all of their altar and ritual candles with fresh new ones. It's also a time to clean your candle holders, re-dress the altar with new clothes and consider decorations to help bring in the spring. Cleansing using natural ingredients like lemon juice, lemon oils, vinegars and ammonia all help eliminate the old, stale and unnecessary energies and allow you to recharge the energies in your home with light, happy and fresh energies.

Imbolc is a Gaelic word that means 'in the belly' referring to the pregnant ewes and cattle of the field ready to give birth and the new life that springs forth this time of year, when the snows disappear and the greening of the fields begin. New hatchlings are chirping in their nests and you'll see around the first of February the Canada geese flying back to their northern homes.  It may seem a bit early, February 1st to celebrate the beginning of spring, but this holiday comes from the ancient Celtic culture from Western Europe over 1,000 years ago.  At that time, in that part of the world the first warming weather of spring did appear as early as February 1st.

Today we have a bit more cold weather up to two months after Imbolc, but nonetheless one can see the first signs of spring, should you just look. Ice on the rivers and ponds will often start to thin and break with the warming temperatures and in my garden the Cyclamen will start to bloom. Even in the snow the Cyclamen, a pretty low growing flower, will put forth a vibrant display that thumbs its nose at the winter and cold temperatures.

 Cyclamen

Its funny how many times in these days people will exit their homes sometime in late March or early April and exclaim in delight how spring has arrived, seemingly without our being aware of it. One day, its just here! Well, the witch tends to work with nature much as the ancients did. We notice the little signs and omens declaring spring to have already arrived, even though we're still bundled in our cloaks and hats.

I can feel the warm edge to a cold spring breeze. I look at the sunsets and can see the change which indicates warmer and milder weather. Have you noticed in the past week or so the vibrant, red hued, amazing sunsets we've been experiencing? The redder the sunset the milder the weather will be the next day. It might rain, but it will be warmer than typical for a winter day. We've had milder weather this month that the sunsets have been heralding with breathtaking beauty.

The witch spends time, lots of time, studying the natural world around her. Well .  .  .  at least this one does.  I grew up on a dairy farm in the cow country of central Connecticut and I've been paying close attention for many years now. This is an opportunity for you to notice the natural world around you. Make a point of looking for the earliest signs of spring you can find.

Make a list of the candles you'll need. God/dess candles, elemental directional candles, Sabbat candles, spell candles, and luminary candles are all candles you will need throughout the year. The following list is the colors that are typically associated with the candles you will need.  We'll talk more about Imbolc as we get closer to the Sabbat. You have some supplies to gather!

North - Green
East - Yellow
South - Red
West - Blue

Imbolc - Red
Ostara - light Blue
Beltaine - Red or White or combinations of the two
Litha -  Yellow
Lughnasa - Orange
Mabon - dark Blue
Samhain - Black
Yule - Green or Red or combinations of the two

God/Goddess candles can be figure candles, gold, silver or white typically.  I love shopping for candles, have fun!

Happy New Year!!! You create your reality . . . what will you create this year?

 Good Evening,

Happy New Year! I hope you had a lovely time ringing in the new and ushering out the old! Now that the New Year is upon us, there are things we can do to make needed change in our lives that will help move things along.

First, let's think about this upcoming year.  Looking at the Pagan Wheel of the Year, we have finished 'harvesting' that which we had sowed last year on Samhain. Yule brings in a time of reflection and contemplation of what we wish to accomplish this year.  January can be a time of planning for the upcoming year, as well as doing things to ensure a successful year. This is the time of planning and decision making. Soon we will be ready to 'plant the seeds' of our ideas and desires. Then we will nurture them and finally harvest our work late this year, but for now planning is in order.

This is the time of year for planning many things. If you've noticed, seed catalogs come in the mail this time of year, and even if you're not a gardener just leafing through the pages and dreaming of a summer garden can be very refreshing and invigorating. If you don't receive seed catalogs in the mail, by all means get on some mailing lists and ask for them to be sent out to you!  Companies like Burpee and Park are classic seed companies that have a long reputation for quality products and excellent service.

Plan on one concept you would like to bring to harvest this year. Have you always wanted to do .  .  .  what? Fill in the blank, for you!  Perhaps you've always wanted to plant a garden, or write a book, or paint a picture, lose some weight, get healthy, stop smoking etc, etc.  The list can be as endless as each person's desire. Pick just one! We can and will work on many concepts throughout the year, and we'll be casting many spells and bringing things into manifestation. But for your year long 'spell' have just one concept you would like to manifest.  Write it down. It will be your major magickal goal for this year.

No need to do anything else right now, just write down your magickal goal and place the slip of paper somewhere, it can even be a 'note' on your computer's desktop, as long as you see it daily. See it and take but a moment to contemplate the goal, then go about your work or play.

This entire month of January can be used much as the first day of the year has often been used over the centuries to bring in prosperity, good health and abundance.  Have plenty of bread in your house this month, along with salt (one full container will do) and if you don't have a penny crock, start one! These all are samples of sympathetic magick. Having enough 'bread' in your house translates as having enough food to eat this year, having plenty of salt is also a symbol of abundance and wealth. Take a jar or crock, a bowl or basket and start throwing your loose change into it. It will attract additional monies to your household. Its perfectly o.k. to wrap up the coins and spend them throughout the year, but keep adding to it, as often as possible. And never allow the crock to go empty, keep at least nine coins in it at all times.

Clearing your home of clutter and mess is also very important this time of the year. Any piles of 'stuff' you have been planning on getting rid of should be discarded this month. It will help keep you organized and clutter free for the rest of the year. It will also help you keep your thoughts in order and be less scattered, if this is a problem for you.

Contact friends you haven't seen in a while and visit, send a message to them or call them on the phone. It will keep the relationship healthy and strong and prevent regrets as time often passes by quicker than we plan for.

Make plans for a check up with your doctor, if you don't already do this on a regular basis, to help keep your health intact and your physical energy strong.  A big aspect of magickal manifestation is the actual physical doing of a thing.  Unfortunately too many of us wait until the last minute. We wait until we're sick, until its broken, until we're stressed and ready to scream before looking into ways to alleviate our issues whereas the witch will handle these things in a timely manner, thus (hopefully!) taking care of things before they blow up and become a monstrous chore. So .  .  .  start planning, contemplating and thinking about your upcoming year, and I'll tell you a secret. YOU create your reality.  You do!!! So what will you create?

Just some timely witchy tips for your January. Plan carefully my witchling, and plan well.
